20 Spiritual Gifts

Quick reference for identifying and understanding your God-given gifts

The 20 spiritual gifts listed below are drawn from five Scripture passages: Romans 12:6-8, 1 Corinthians 12:8-10, 1 Corinthians 12:28, Ephesians 4:11, and 1 Peter 4:9-10. Each gift is a God-given special ability given to every believer at conversion by the Holy Spirit, to share his love and strengthen the body of Christ. See Lesson 2 for the full lesson.

Four Traps to Avoid

  1. Comparison — Placing greater value on more visible gifts. No gift is second-rate in God's eyes (1 Corinthians 12:21-22).
  2. Projection — Expecting others to be good at the same things you excel at. Celebrate each person's unique gifts instead.
  3. Rejection — Refusing to accept the gifts God has given you, often because you lack an official title or position.
  4. Deception — Believing you have gifts God has not actually given you, distracting you from your true gifts.

Key Principle

Spiritual gifts must be expressed in love (1 Corinthians 13). Without love, the most gifted person is unusable. The test: ask yourself, "Who is the primary beneficiary of my actions?" If the answer is others, you are serving with love. If it is yourself, realign with God.
